Bare Boat Charter Certification Training

Bare Boat Charter Certification is a critical part of your sailing resume that most, if not all, charter companies require before they will allow you to skipper one of their yachts. The skills taught in this course are critical for both the prospective skipper and first mate.

This 4-day, 3-night live-aboard course is designed specifically for couples who wish to bare boat charter in the BVIs, US Virgin Islands, Florida Keys, Bahamas and most US charter locations.

This cruise incorporates more than 80 hours of focused, practical training with special emphasis on anchoring and picking up moorings, navigating in tidal currents and tidal ranges, close-quarters boat handling, coastal navigation, yacht systems and energy management, weather forecasting and preparation, dinghy launching and retrieval and many other details that a charter company wants a prospective skipper to understand.

If your charter plans include Belize, we will also include how to anchor with two anchors, reef anchoring techniques and shallow water navigation — all of which are necessary to receive a required Certificate of Competency from the Belize Port Authority.

To be clear, charter companies get the final say on whether they believe you are competent to skipper one of their vessels, and their criteria vary widely depending on the charter company, the boat and the location of the charter. You and your first mate’s sailing resumes should include both recreational sailing and specialized training.
