CROSSING THE EQUATOR SOUTHBOUND TO NEW ZEALAND

Harry Pattison, Captain

Harry is a United States Coast Guard licensed Master of Sail and Power vessels up to 100 tons. He has crossed the Pacific Ocean multiple times and has more than 40 years experience sailing the Pacific, Caribbean and Salish Sea.

He’s a mediocre guitar-er, curry fiend and a sea-faring hobo-sapien. He also occasionally writes about himself in the third person. Which is kind of creepy.

Joy Archer, First Mate

Joy is a professional writer and curly-haired person. Joy also has multiple Pacific crossings under her belt. You can read all about it on her amazing blog on Substack (the subscription is free.)

She is an accomplished open water and masters swimmer and she is purported to be occasionally funny.

In 2021 we decided to take Oh Joy II out for a sail. More than two years later we got back home. We ended up sailing to New Zealand. And back. 25,000 miles in all.

We explored Mexico, French Polynesia, American Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga, Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands, before we made the 5,800 mile passage to Alaska and then back to Bainbridge Island.

We sailed all the way across the biggest ocean on a planet made of oceans. Twice. (Hmm. Writing it down like that makes it sound kind of badass.)

The net result of all that adventuring is that we love sailing more than ever. Come sail with us and we’ll show you what we mean.

“We all had a BLAST! The highlight, however, was sailing with you, Harry, in the sound. You are a fantastic and patient teacher — and a ton of fun to be around.”
